Toys have been around for as long as humans have walked this earth. Ancient toys were made by parents from the materials found around them to entertain and teach children the lessons of being an adult.  Mammals also exhibit this behavior and it’s common to see young creatures stalking pinecone “prey” to learn hunting skills.

It wasn’t until the fourteenth century that the word toy was used. The origin of the word in unknown, but it is used to describe an object that is used for play. Toys are usually designed for children and pets.

As mentioned previously toys were first made by parents for children, it wasn’t until the 1830’s that toys became part of big business. This was due to the development of the steam engine which made production and distribution much easier. These early toys were tin, cast iron, or wood toys.

The development of vulcanized rubber led to the creation of other toys such as balls, rubber dolls, and squeeze toys. Dolls are one of the oldest toys and one of the most universal. Ancient dolls could be as simple as a bundle of grass or a wooden carving. Rubber dolls allowed the toy to become more lifelike, but the game is still the same- life situation simulations.

Mattel is one of the world’s largest toy companies. They began in 1945 creating dollhouse furniture. Today they are the maker of the world’s most popular doll- Barbie.

Play is a very important to the development of a child. The age old adage of a child’s business is the business of play is very true.  Toys help children develop their identities, they help their physical development, they help them explore relationships, and they allow children to practice adult skills.

Toys help children to enhance their cognitive behavior and they stimulate a child’s creativity. Toys like blocks, marbles, and balls help children learn science and math through the use of spatial reasoning and planning. Play-doh and Silly putty help children to develop hand eye coordination and social, emotional, and cognitive development.
Even babies benefit from toys. Infant toys are designed help babies recognize shapes and colors. They also help the physical development of motor skills and visual and auditory sensory.

Many men still cherish their GI Joes and there are plenty of women who hold on to the baby dolls and teddy bears of their childhood. These relics of the past take us back to our more youthful times and can serve as subtle reminder that one is never too old to play!
