Teddy Bears
The teddy bear was named after our twenty-sixth president Theodore Roosevelt. In 1902 Theodore traveled to Mississippi to settle a border dispute between the state and Louisiana. During his visit he went on a much publicized bear hunt and the term was coined.
The bear was created shortly after the hunt and was sold to toy stores all over the country as the teddy bear. Plush bear toys had been sold for many decades previous to this, but due to the president’s popularity the teddy bear became a top seller in toy stores. Both boys and girls alike loved the teddy bear.
One of the most appealing things about teddy bears is there sweet, non-threatening comfort. Many children turn to their bears in times of anxiety. Often children can be seen dragging their bears around for several years before “growing out” of them.
